The bridge, which is Heritage listed, is 55 metres high, making it the second tallest bridge in the State of Victoria, after the Westgate Bridge. It's just under 400 metres long, which is why locals call it the Quarter Mile Bridge (it is 400 yards long). One fascinating fact, not well known, is that the height from the Maribyrnong River to the railway line is higher than from Sydney Harbour to the road of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Until the completion of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the viaduct was in fact the highest railway bridge in Australia.
The main traffic over the bridge is freight services, but it also carries two passenger services, the Melbourne to Sydney NSW TrainLink XPT, and the Melbourne-Albury V/Line service which now runs on standard gauge. giving passenger a spectacular view from it.
