Railway Stations: Horsham, Victoria

The station was officially opened on 5 February 1879 by Governor of Victoria George Bowen, along with the opening of the new broad gaure Western Victoria railway line. The station celebrated its centenary on 5 February 1979. The station was served by V/Line Dimboola services, until the service was withdrawn on 21 August 1993.

In 1970, a number of track alterations took place at the station, including the removal of a carriage dock, a coal stage, and the siding leading to the former turntable. In 1972, another siding was abolished. The former signal box was replaced with a signal panel in 1976, with the signal box demolished soon after. It was thought to be one of the oldest buildings in Horsham. In 1985, CTC signalling was provided at the station.

In April 2007, the station was upgraded at a total cost of $490,000. However, only a small section of the platform was resurfaced, which has resulted in passengers having to move up or down the train to access the platform.

About Horsham

Horsham is a regional city in the Wimmera region of western Victoria. Located on a bend in the Wimmera River, Horsham is approximately 300 kilometres northwest of the state capital Melbourne. As of the 2021 Census, Horsham had a population of 20,429. It is the most populous city in Wimmera, and the main administrative centre for the Rural City of Horsham local government area. It is the eleventh largest city in Victoria after Melbourne, Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo, Wodonga, Mildura, Shepparton, Warrnambool, Traralgon, and Wangaratta.

An early settler James Monckton Darlot named the settlement after the town of Horsham in his native England. It grew throughout the latter 19th and early 20th centuries as a centre of Western Victoria's wheat and wool industry, becoming the largest city in the Wimmera and Western Victoria by the early 1910s. Horsham was declared a city in 1949 and was named Australia's Tidiest Town in 2001 and Victoria's Tidiest Town in 2021.
