Quorn, S.A.



Like many towns and cities in mid-north South Australia, Quorn is largely a child of the age of steam, when the railway lines from the south and the east snaked out to connect with far-flung settlements their intersections and junctions forming the bases for busy railways towns.

Where is it?: Quorn is 39 km northeast of Port Augusta.


The town was surveyed by Godfrey Walsh in 1878 and named after Quorndon in Leicestershire, United Kingdom, as part of the preparations for building the railway line from Port Augusta northwards. The railway line from Port Augusta to Quorn opened in 1879 and was subsequently extended north to Government Gums (Farina) in 1882, Marree in 1884, Oodnadatta in 1890 and Alice Springs in 1929. This railway line later became known as the Great Northern Railway and later the Central Australia Railway.

In 1917, Quorn became the crossroads of any north-south (on the Central Australian Railway to Oodnadatta) or east-west travel in Australia, when the Trans-Australian Railway was completed between Port Augusta and Kalgoorlie. This made Quorn an important town, given that any person travelling east-west or north-south in Australia would need to pass through Quorn. As a result, many fine buildings were built as the town expanded.

Quorn's role as a crossroads was lost when a standard gauge railway connection was opened between Port Pirie Junction and Port Augusta in 1937, meaning east-west trains bypassed Quorn. However, during World War II, Quorn was a vital service point for trains heading north to Alice Springs and carried over 1,000,000 troops heading to Darwin and on to Papua New Guinea. Trains services through Quorn peaked at over 50 per day during and immediately after the period of World War II. Services during this time also included coal mined at Leigh Creek being moved to the newly opened Playford A Power Station in Port Augusta.



During the 1950s a new standard gauge line was built that passed on the western side of The Dutchmans Stern, Mount Arden and Mount Eyre, from Stirling North to Brachina and then roughly following the original narrow gauge route through Leigh Creek and to Marree, thus bypassing Quorn. This bypass took away the last railway traffic through the Pichi Richi Pass, and the last major freight traffic through Quorn. The only services left operating through Quorn were freight between Peterborough and Hawker. As a result, Quorn's importance diminished and eventually in 1980s the railway was completely closed as the last freight was moved to road transport. One unusual aspect of the railway working from Peterborough to Quorn and then on to Hawker was the need for the engine to be turned and attached to the opposite end of the train when arriving at Quorn, as it was not a "through" station for the trip from Peterborough to Hawker.

In 1973, a group of railway enthusiasts assembled with the desire to preserve the unique bridges and stone work built in the previous century that formed the railway through the Pichi Richi Pass between Quorn and Stirling North. Thus the Pichi Richi Railway Preservation Society was formed. Although the intention was to just preserve the railway through the Pichi Richi Pass, they later acquired operable railway rollingstock and locomotives and today provide a tourist railway service through the Pichi Richi Pass from Quorn to Port Augusta. There is at least one book by preservationists showing the line in its heyday.


Pichi Richi Railway

Take a ride back in time on the Pichi Richi Railway. An historic train (sometimes steam, sometimes diesel train) that runs on a section of the original line that ran between Port Augusta and Alice Springs (between Port Augusta and Quorn), the railway is one of Australia's most famous tourist railways, heading through the picturesque Pichi Richi Pass. If you are visiting this region, it is worth timing your visit around the day that it operates.



Services usually operate on Sundays during school holidays and usually once a month on a Sunday in the winter months outside of that time. Check the website for a timetable. Some services depart from Port Augusta railway station (the same as the Indian Pacific/Ghan station), others depart from Quorn's historic railway station. While you are in Quorn, take a walk around the historic rail yard.




Follow the Original Ghan

The Ghan is one of the world's great rail journeys, a ribbon of steel through outback Australia that links Adelaide and Darwin. The original Ghan, named after the Afghan cameleers who helped open up the outback, first ran in 1879 between Port Augusta and Quorn. Over the next 50 years it was extended in stages through the Flinders Ranges to Maree and Oodnadatta, then finally to Alice Springs in 1929. When the second line was built and re-routed through Tarcoola in 1980, the Old Ghan line was left to the elements. To follow the path of the original Ghan, starting from Quorn and driving along the Oodnadatta Track in search of the remnants of the old line, is a fascinating journey of discovery.

Quorn on Location

The town's buildings have made Quorn a popular location for feature films and commercials. The first one was Bitter Springs, filmed in nearby Warren Gorge in 1949. It starred Chips Rafferty, Tommy Trinder, Charles 'Bud' Tingwell, Michael Pate and Gordon Jackson. The Hollywood movie, The Sundowners, which starred Robert Mitchum, Deborah Kerr, Peter Ustinov and Chips Rafferty, was filmed at Quorn in 1961.

Other films shot here include Kangaroo (1953), starring Peter Lawford, Maureen O'Hara, Chips Rafferty; Sunday Too Far Away (1975), starring Jack Thompson, Reg Lye and John Ewart, was filmed in the Flinders Ranges near the town with Quorn and Peterborough both featuring in it. The 1986 TV mini-series, The Shiralee, starring Bryan Brown and Rebecca Smart; the TV mini-series The Last Frontier; a youthful Mel Gibson was filmed at the same hotel, running down the stairs and onto Railway Terrace in a scene in the movie, Gallipoli. Many of the town's historic building had supporting roles in the film. Russell Crowe also filmed his Gallipoli movie, The Water Deviner, in and around Quorn.

Coincidentally, the English town of Quorndon after which Quorn is named, is also a popular location for television shows and feature films. Enigma, a romantic thriller based on the international best-selling novel by Robert Harris, directed by Michael Apted and starring Dougray Scott and Kate Winslet, was shot there.

Surrounding area

The Flinders Ranges region covers most of the north-east of South Australia, and includes some sparse and isolated parts of the state. For most tourists, the areas most often visited are Wilpena Pound and the towns in the mid- and far north of the state, though more adventurous travellers may choose to venture beyond onto the Birdsville and Strzlecki Tracks towards Queensland and the Northern Territory.

Walking Trails

The Heysen Trail and the Mawson Trail, pair of long distance trails dedicated respectively to walking and cycling, pass through town and there are many bushwalks and four-wheel drive tracks.

Yourambulla Caves Historic Reserve


Yourambulla Caves Historic Reserve is an Aboriginal art site near the road to Wilpena Pound between Kanyaka and Wilson. There is a walking trail that leads to the stairs at the base of the cave. The cave contains many paintings, all of which are in excellent condition. There is also an interpretive sign showing the meaning of the painted symbols used. The art portrays "the Dreaming" in which artists record the exploits of their ancestors, outlining rituals and explaining the creation of land formations, animals and plants.



The markings themselves look like a secret language, Art Brut with childlike patterns that are beautiful and rhythmic. These enchanting works act as an oasis of visual splendour in a dry and arid land. The view out across the plain from the caves, which nestle below Yourambulla Peak, is impressive. The colors of the cave paintings mimic the colors of that landscape - no surprise, as many of the ochres come from the earth itself.

Wilson


Wilson, a former village in the Flinders Ranges between Quorn and Hawker, came and went under similar circumstances to many 19th century settlements in South Australia. These small towns were formed as community centres after South Australia's pastoral runs were resumed by the Government in the 1870s and subdivided into small farms. Drought, the inability of the land to sustain such intense agriculture and the arrival of the motor car all contributed to the demise of most of these settlements, the ruins of which are scattered across the South Australian countryside.



The town of Wilson sprang up as a siding after the construction of the railway through the Flinders Ranges to Hawker. The Port Augusta-Quorn section became the first stage of a planned north-south transcontinental railway between Adelaide and Darwin that was first mooted by Melbourne businessman, J. Roberston in 1858. Twenty years later, South Australia finally began building its 3 feet 6 inch gauge Great Northern Railway. Starting in Port Augusta it was expected to reach Darwin within a short time. Crossing the western plains via Hawker, Beltana and Farina, it reached Marree in 1883. It was extended to reach Oodnadatta in 1891.



When the Commonwealth Government took control in 1926 it extended the line from Oodnadatta to Alice Springs and from Pine Creek to Birdum. The Ghan name originated in Quorn in 1923 when the Great Northern Express was dubbed The Afghan Express by railwaymen in memory of the Afghan camel drivers who were the main carriers through the area before the railway was built. During the Second World War, Larrimah, nine kilometres north of Birdum, became the effective railhead. The thousand or so kilometres between Birdum and Alice Springs were never completed. Washaways in the north and the incapacity of the railway to handle expanding traffic saw a new standard-gauge railway constructed from Stirling North to Brachina. The railway through Wilson was closed to regular traffic in 1957 though by then the village had all but disappeared.



In 1880, when the village of Wilson came into existence, the railway had reached as far as Hawker. A station was built there and a town was surveyed around it. Blocks were sold and very soon a town consisting mainly of wood and iron buildings came into being. The Hawker Hotel/Motel, built as the Royal Hotel in 1882, the Post Office, which was built in the same year, and the railway station and goods shed built in 1880 are the most notable of the surviving buildings from Hawker's initial years. Wilson sprang up around a railway platform built on the Quorn to Hawker section of the line and catered for a number of families living in the area who farmed wheat. A hotel, a school, a store and a stationmaster's residence were built around 1880 to provide the essential services required by the people of Wilson.

With the arrival of the motor vehicle in the early 1900s, settlements like Wilson that were already battling to survive lost the reason for their existence. The major towns in the region, which in the case of Wilson, was Hawker, were now only 10 or 15 minutes' drive away, rather than a few hours' walk each way, and offered a far greater range of products and services than a local store could offer. The townsfolk and the remaining farmers sold up and the land in the area reverted back to being just a few large landholdings as it had been back in the Kanyaka days. Two thirds of the area originally farmed here has reverted back to being semi-arid grazing country. The last to leave was the stationmaster who had already been gone for a few decades when the railway line closed in 1957.
